Language and Literacy

Early language skills are how babies and toddlers begin to understand words and use sounds, gestures, and simple words to communicate their needs, feelings, and ideas.

Every child grows at their own pace, but some signs may suggest they could benefit from extra support. Early help can make a big difference in building strong communication skills.

Signs your child may need support for language delay:

  • Doesn’t respond to their name by 12 months

  • Limited or no babbling by 12 months

  • Not using single words by 16 months

  • Using fewer than 50 words by 24 months

  • Difficulty combining two words by 24–30 months

  • Limited gestures like pointing or waving

  • Trouble understanding simple instructions

At Speech Ally, we believe parents and caregivers are the most important communication partners. That’s why we focus on parent coaching—supporting you with tools and strategies to naturally boost your child’s language every day.

Our clinicians are trained in trusted programs like Hanen’s More Than Words, which help families build communication through fun, responsive interactions.

We work alongside families to create supportive, empowering environments where children feel heard, understood, and encouraged to communicate.
