Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

At Speech Ally, we believe everyone deserves a way to communicate that works for them. For some children, spoken language isn’t the easiest or most reliable way to share their thoughts, needs, and feelings. That’s where AAC—Augmentative and Alternative Communication—comes in.

AAC includes any tool or strategy that helps someone communicate. It can be as simple as gestures or pictures, or as high-tech as a speech-generating device (like an iPad with a communication app). AAC doesn’t stop speech—it supports it. It gives kids access to language now, while building a strong foundation for future growth.

We see AAC as a bridge to connection, not a backup plan.

AAC might be right for your child if they:

  • Have limited spoken words or are not yet speaking

  • Get frustrated when trying to communicate

  • Use behavior to communicate needs

  • Speak, but have trouble being understood

  • Need support expressing thoughts, questions, or stories

At Speech Ally, our approach is child-led and total communication-based, which means we support all ways your child communicates. We honor their preferences, celebrate their strengths, and use AAC to open more paths to connection.

We provide comprehensive AAC assessments and can support families through the process of obtaining an AAC device, including funding and access through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP).

Our clinicians are trained in a wide range of AAC tools and systems. We work closely with families to ensure AAC is integrated in ways that feel natural and supportive—at home, school, and in the community.
